On The Big Screen With Live Orchestral Accompaniment
Music by Jonny Greenwood
See one of the greatest movies of the 21st century accompanied live by the Hallé Orchestra and its composer, Jonny Greenwood.
Greenwood plays his favourite instrument, the ondes Martenot, an unusual electronic invention of the early 20th century. He once explained, ‘I’ve always wanted to be able to play an instrument that was like singing, and there’s nothing closer.’
There Will Be Blood was Greenwood’s film score debut. Often topping ‘best-of’ lists, the movie is widely regarded as director Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterpiece.
Daniel Day-Lewis plays oil prospector Daniel Plainview, whose greedy quest for wealth in early 20th-century California becomes a gripping fable about American capitalism.
With its fascinating dissonances and striking use of strings, Greenwood’s atmospheric soundtrack redefined the expectations of cinema-goers. It became the first of many Greenwood/Anderson collaborations.
