Hallé Youth Orchestra
Aku Sorensen conductor
Programme includes:
Bernstein West Side Story: Symphonic Dances
Immerse yourself in Bernstein’s iconic music and be swept into the world of two lovers.
In his first live appearance with the Hallé Youth Orchestra since winning the Siemens Hallé International Conductors Competition earlier this year, Aku Sorensen brings Bernstein’s blockbuster score to life. One of the most performed 20th century works for orchestra, this performance will be bold, vibrant and alive with the energy that only a youth orchestra can deliver.
Set in New York, the story is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Maria and Tony, from opposing gangs in the West Side, fall in love but can their bond overcome the prejudice of the Jets and the Sharks?
From the finger snaps of the opening bars to the sweeping emotional finale, Bernstein’s fusion of jazz, Latin rhythms and symphonic power invites you in to experience every soaring melody and thunderous climax as if hearing them for the first time.
