Get ready for dancing rhythms from Eastern Europe and Brahms’ triumphant First Symphony.
At the turn of the 20th century, the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók rescued Transylvanian folk music from oblivion by recording and collecting the musical ideas he found on his travels. He used them throughout his own creations, including these sprightly dances we’ll enjoy tonight.
His compatriot Ligeti draws on Eastern European fiddle playing in his Violin Concerto, and takes us on a wild ride through outlandish sound and deep emotion. Our Featured Artist Leila Josefowicz is the perfect interpreter.
We’ll close the evening with Brahms’ monumental First Symphony. The work took him 14 years to complete – but the result is sublime.
