Hallé Orchestra - Rush Hour: Dvořák’s Symphony No.9

Kahchun Wong conductor

Dvořák Symphony No.9, ‘From the New World’ 40′

Explore the endlessly listenable melodies of Dvořák’s ‘New World’ Symphony.

On Neil Armstrong’s first mission to the moon, he took along a tape of Dvořák’s Symphony No.9. Whether or not it’s the best symphony on earth, it is definitely adored by audiences, and surprisingly recognisable (though your reference point could be anything from Ted Lasso or The Departed to the famous 1970s Hovis advert).

Having just received a prominent and well-paid job in New York, Dvořák set out in this symphony to create the sound of America. But the beautiful horn melody in the second movement is drenched in nostalgia – perhaps for his Czech homeland.

Before the symphony, Kahchun Wong will introduce you to this beloved music.
