Weber Der Freischütz: Overture
Grieg Piano Concerto
Brahms Symphony No.4
Join us for a rare UK visit from this top-tier German orchestra – with a trio of Romantic masterpieces.
Tonight’s centrepiece needs little introduction: Grieg’s Piano Concerto, a perennial favourite both before and after it was immortalised by Morecambe, Wise and André Previn. Charismatic Italian virtuoso Federico Colli will be playing all the right notes in the right order, as befits a recent winner of the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition.
To open, the radiant overture from Carl Maria von Weber’s 1821 masterpiece, which launched the era of German Romantic opera. And to close, one of the greatest of all symphonies: Brahms’ Fourth, a tumultuous journey capped by the magnificent passacaglia. Jonathan Darlington, newly installed as the NSO’s Chief Conductor following predecessor Kahchun Wong’s appointment at the helm of the Hallé, directs from the podium.
