Prokofiev Symphony No.7 (32′)
Ravel Le tombeau de Couperin (16′)
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2 (32′)
Pre-Concert Event 6.30pm – Geoffrey Owen and RNCM pianists
Geoffrey Owen, the Halle’s Head of Artistic Planning, introduces the evening’s programme, followed by a performance of the original version of Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin by pianists from the RNCM School of Keyboard Studies.
Pre-Concert talks take place in the Auditorium and are free to concert ticket holders.
Described as ‘joyful, lyrical and delightful’ by Shostakovich, Prokofiev’s final symphony has both a simplicity and directness synonymous with his plan for a ‘simple symphony’ for young people. Throughout it is blessed with charm, autumnal wistfulness, and in the finale, youthful vivacity, as if the composer was looking back fondly to his childhood. Ravel’s homage to the French Baroque era was also intended as his memorial to friends killed in the First World War, each movement having a separate dedication.
Please note, Alexander Gavrylyuk has been replaced by Boris Giltburg for Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
