Hallé oboist Virginia Shaw has a second passion – the Japanese Sho. Made of bamboo pipes, this mouth organ is said to mimic the call of the phoenix – a legendary sound indeed! East meets West in music for oboe and string quartet by Takemitsu, and in pieces for Sho by the late Belgian composer, Wim Henderickx.
