Schnittke Cello Concerto No.1 (40’)
Shostakovich Symphony No.6 (30’)
On 21 July 1985, Alfred Schnittke was declared clinically dead three times after a colossal stroke – but somehow he survived, and tonight’s astonishing Cello Concerto was the first work he completed after his recovery. Tonight also takes in Strauss’s sassy homage to a German folk hero and Shostakovich’s epic Sixth.
