When the Nazis won power in 1933, Paul Hindemith was caught in the crossfire. His first response was this Technicolor symphony, inspired by a medieval painter who rebelled against an establishment. We stay in Germany for Brahms’s elegant ‘St Anthony’ Variations and Mahler’s rich settings of traditional German folk poems.
