Charles Ignatius Sancho was born on a slave ship on the Atlantic in 1729, yet he became a writer, composer and the first black person to vote in the UK. Performed by Paterson Joseph (Wonka, Timeless) and accompanying musicians led by Ben Park, and based on Joseph’s novel The Secret Diaries of Ignatius Sancho.
The show opens with the premiere of an opera by Streetwise Opera, and will also feature a Q&A with Paterson, performances by RNCM Opera students, foyer workshops, exhibitions and an after-show performance by Lavender Rodriguez.
This event is a Bridgewater Hall commission as part of Streetwise Opera’s Re:Discover Festival 7th & 8th June 2024, a two day celebration exploring the music of artists of African and Caribbean heritage.
