Chopin Nocturne in C sharp minor
Chopin Barcarolle
Liszt Sonata in B minor
Liszt Berceuse
Chopin Sonata No.3 in B minor
A jewel box of Romantic treasures performed by one of Britain’s leading pianists.
Benjamin Grosvenor is among the finest musicians of his generation – and tonight’s programme provides the perfect showcase for his technical mastery.
Two composer–performers tower over the Romantic piano repertoire. Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt were contemporaries, friends and near-neighbours in Paris, but they were very different characters. While Liszt was an unabashed showman whose flashy performances won him fortune and fame, Chopin was a troubled soul who died at just 39.
Benjamin Grosvenor reunites the pair in this sparkling Romantic recital. Chopin bookends the evening: a radiant Nocturne and Barcarolle to start, the third sonata to close. In between, we’ll hear the best of Liszt: his epic B minor sonata and his famous Berceuse, itself inspired by Chopin’s own timeless lullaby.
