Paul Lewis piano
Per Nørgård Symphony No. 8
Grieg Piano Concerto
Sibelius Symphony No. 3
We’re off to the wilds of Scandinavia! Northern Lights, midnight sun and a smorgasbord of Nordic greats. Chief Conductor John Storgårds has a natural affinity with this music and is the dedicatee of tonight’s opener, the thrilling, most recent symphony of Danish composer Per Nørgård, a mind-bending kaleidoscope for large orchestra.
Paul Lewis returns to perform a colossus of the solo repertoire – the towering Piano Concerto by Grieg. The work explores the natural wonders and rich folklore of Norway. Grieg’s dramatic storytelling and effortless melodies reach their apex in this glorious work.
Finally, Sibelius’s Third Symphony. John Storgårds has been called a ‘master architect’ of this great symphonist, as revealed in his recorded cycle of all the symphonies with the orchestra. The synergy between these two Finns is, quite simply unmissable.
