Britten Piano Concerto
Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances
Ben Glassberg closes the BBC Philharmonic’s 2022-23 Bridgewater Hall season with a dazzling programme of twentieth century treasures. Starting with a whisper from one of Britain’s lesser-known composers, Ethel Smyth’s Cornish Cliffs from The Wreckers precedes and predicts Britten’s revolutionary operas and is equally as tantalising as it is radiant. Britten’s bravura Piano Concerto, a welcome chance for Steven Osborne to show off his virtuosic flair in the glistening textures and quirky interplay between piano and orchestra. Lastly, an explosive showstopper in the Symphonic Dances – Rachmaninov’s love-letter to his homeland and his final work.
