Elgar Overture: Cockaigne

Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending
Handel Music for the Royal Fireworks: selection

Arnold English Dances
Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Walton Henry V Suite

Tonight we offer a selection of pieces which have always featured prominently in this orchestra’s repertoire – both Elgar and Vaughan Williams entrusted the Hallé with symphonic premieres – led by conductor Gergely Madaras. We perform Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture and Vaughan Williams’ Tallis Fantasia, as well as a true icon of English music, The Lark Ascending, which is perfectly depicted in the hands of Hallé Permanent Guest Leader, Paul Barritt. Laurence Olivier described his Oscar-winning film as ‘William’s Henry V’ so central to its success was William Walton’s dazzling score.

The Hallé Concerts Society is very grateful to Paul Barritt for replacing Lyn Fletcher who has had to withdraw.
