Featuring Marie Leenhardt harp
Centre stage in this concert, with its distinct dance theme, is the Hallé’s harpist, Marie Leenhardt. Debussy’s pair of sacred and secular dances for harp and strings were commissioned by the Pleyel company to promote the chromatic harp. Following them is Saint-Saëns’s ghoulish evocation of whirling skeletons dancing through the night until dawn. Marie swaps her harp for a bandonéon to play Piazzolla’s Oblivión, one of the Argentine tango master’s most renowned pieces, famous for its inclusion in Marco Bellocchio’s film Enrico IV.
