Schumann Symphony No.3 in E flat major, ‘Rhenish’
Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 in D minor
Big tunes, grand vistas and deep feelings can only mean one thing – an evening in the company of some truly great Romantic composers. It’s high spirits to start, with Carl Maria von Weber’s curtain raiser to his opera Oberon. From the supernatural to the natural world, Weber shows his hand as a master of pure theatre.
Our journey continues down the River Rhine with Robert Schumann and snapshots of the landscape which inspired him. The ‘Rhenish’ Symphony is an outpouring of luscious melodies and a torrent of sheer joy.
The final port of call is Brahms’s vigorous First Piano Concerto. This early work is big on love for his friends Clara and Robert Schumann (yes, him again). It’s an affectionate affair but perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s packed with drama too. A master of the keyboard, Garrick Ohlsson returns to Manchester to perform Brahms’s mighty work.
