Berg 7 Early Songs
Mahler Symphony No.6

Gianandrea Noseda conductor
Sally Matthews soprano

Many of the longingly romantic Seven Early Songs by Berg were written in 19058, during his apprenticeship with Schoenberg. They may have stemmed in style from the songs of Brahms and Strauss, but Berg brings a freer, dreamy expression to these songs of love. They are sung tonight by former Kathleen Ferrier Award winner and Radio 3 New Generation Artist Sally Matthews. Mahler composed his Sixth Symphony only a few years earlier, marshalling huge orchestral forces with especially large brass and percussion sections.
