Many of the longingly romantic Seven Early Songs by Berg were written in 19058, during his apprenticeship with Schoenberg. They may have stemmed in style from the songs of Brahms and Strauss, but Berg brings a freer, dreamy expression to these songs of love. They are sung tonight by former Kathleen Ferrier Award winner and Radio 3 New Generation Artist Sally Matthews. Mahler composed his Sixth Symphony only a few years earlier, marshalling huge orchestral forces with especially large brass and percussion sections.
