Many travel to Leipzig to hear Bach’s choir singing in the church where he was Kantor for over 25 years. On this occasion, the St. Thomas Choir of men and boys appears in Manchester with the famous Gewandhaus Orchestra. It is 800 years since the foundation of the church and almost 300 since the choir first performed Bach’s huge liturgical masterpiece. Telling the Easter story through a series of dramatic tableaux, reflective arias and chorales, the Matthew Passion is a statement of Bach’s Christian faith and his total mastery of musical means.
