Rachmaninov Etudes-Tableaux, Op.39 No.9 in D major
Terence Judd/Hallé Award winner Michael McHale opens the season with an eclectic mix of classicism, romanticism and minimalism. Those who recall Michael’s performances of Mozart in The Bridgewater Hall some years ago, will know that he brings refinement and poise to the classical master. Here he tackles the most substantial of Mozart’s sonatas, following it with four dramatic ballades by the youthful Brahms – music that is as substantial as a piano sonata in its range – and one colourful panel of a piano triptych by fellow Ulsterman Philip Hammond. The recital ends with the magic of Rachmaninov.
