One of Holland's most outstanding orchestras pays its first visit to Manchester under Dutch maestro Jaap von Zweden. They perform two mighty works: Rachmaninov's stormy first piano concerto and Shostakovich's huge seventh symphony. The symphony was first performed during the siege of Leningrad in World War II with the sound of artillery as a backdrop. From fierce struggle to resolute defiance and ultimate victory, this potent work continues to stun audiences.
