Manchester Camerata

Manchester Camerata is the northwest's leading chamber orchestra and its home is The Bridgewater Hall. The orchestra also presents concert series at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, the Municipal Hall, Colne, the Lyceum Theatre, Crewe, at the Pavilion Theatre, Rhyl and has recently announced two new residencies at Fallibroome School in Macclesfield and the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre.

This programme of regional concert commitments - with attendant audience development, community and education projects - is the core of the orchestra's work. Manchester Camerata also performs in many other UK venues in places such as Bradford, Halifax, Preston, Leeds and Huddersfield, and at festivals in Buxton, Bath, Cheltenham and Chester. Overseas, the orchestra has toured in Europe, Australia and the Far East, most recently in Japan and Turkey.

Each year Manchester Camerata works with an increasing number of children and community groups. Last season saw the continuation of a project under the National Lottery's Arts for Everyone Scheme, as well as the Young Musician of the Year in Cheshire Schools sponsored by Galliford. The Big Bridgewater Challenge has also become a regular event in the diary: twice a year, 150 children from Greater Manchester meet up with members of the orchestra at The Bridgewater Hall and are challenged to create a brand new piece of music to perform three hours later on stage.

The 16th century Florentine Camerata, which inspired Manchester Camerata's title, was a group of artists, musicians and friends who met regularly for concerts and discussions. Friendship was the essence of the group, just as it is at Manchester Camerata. This foundation ensures the orchestra's continued success, providing the ideal basis for excellence and innovation.

This season, Manchester Camerata will be celebrating its 30th anniversary with Artistic Director & Principal Conductor, Douglas Boyd.
