The Manchester Boys Choir was formed in 1981 and has established itself as one of the finest children's choirs in the world. Everywhere it appears, at home or abroad, the Choir draws favourable comment from audiences and music critics alike. A tour to Finland and an appearance in the Finlandia Hall, Helsinki, was described as 'a dazzling, virtuoso performance which left an unforgettable impression' and 'one of the finest boys choirs in the world.' The Manchester Boys Choir performances are regularly referred to as 'an outstanding evening's entertainment' as they capture the hearts and minds of their listeners by the sheer beauty of their sounds, professionalism in performance, musicianship and entertaining programmes. A typical season includes a series of community concerts, a series in The Bridgewater Hall, where the Choir have enjoyed an official residency since the Hall's opening in September 1996, charity concerts, film work, TV, radio, recording and touring. The Choir is frequently called upon to perform with the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic and Manchester Concert Orchestras under internationally renowned conductors, and provides soloists for Opera North, with whom the Choir enjoys a close association. The Manchester Boys Choir has won the Llangollen International Eisteddfod (twice), the UK National Choral Competition and were finalists in the Sainsbury 'Choir of the Year'. Since 1990 competitive engagements were put to one side to allow a wider variety of opportunity for members who are all accepted without audition. The Choir is a provision of the Manchester City Council Education Music Service. Concert performances and opera liasons have taken the Choir and its soloists the length and breadth of the UK, from Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall to London's Royal Albert Hall, London Palladium (Children's Royal Variety Performance), Royal Festival Hall and Barbican. Abroad, the Choir will visit Russia this year. Previous tours abroad have taken the boys to Australia, Belgium, Holland, Germany (Britten's War Requiem with the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra), Finland, Czechoslovakia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and Denmark. Invitations for 2002 include Finland and the USA (Carnegie Hall, New York). |
